Helloooo,
Today (Wednesday) we stumbled across the best surprise!! We began our way to Astorga, only a quick 14km from where we were, and at approximately 8km there was a really cool stop on the side of the road. A gentleman set up a giant table with a massive selection of food items, and next to it was a little stand with an assortment of coffee, tea, snacks and more. He told people it was by donation, or even free! All around there were couches, rocking chairs, benches, you name it. It was the most pleasant oasis to stop, rest and eat before going on.
We are continually impressed by the creativity and generosity of people along the Camino. Everyone we’ve met who does things to support the pilgrims have also been pilgrims before, and all they want is to give back to the Camino even a slice of what the Camino offered them. It’s a hard thing to describe, but the feeling is palpable when you’re here. Truly some of the most incredible people are along the Camino.
Eventually I met up with my Dad in Astorga (he really go ahead of me) and we took 5 to enjoy the town square and recap the day. Somehow we didn’t once meet up until that point so it had been a while since I saw him. Unfortunately while Dad was walking one of the downhill sections his right knee began to hurt. He got to Astorga on his own, but by the time I arrived he was hurting more and struggling to walk. I took his pack and we got ourselves to the hostel so he could put his feet up and relax.
The Cathedral of Astorga was right across from the hostel so Dad was able to manage and we checked it out. I have officially decided this is my favourite church I’ve seen on the Camino so far. The architecture, design, art and history is simply astounding. They had these phones you put a number into and it would give you information on what you were looking at. Then they had a virtual reality tour, where you put on these googles and it showed you inside and outside of the Cathedral from multiple perspectives. It was so cool but also kind of freaky haha. The Cathedral has hundreds of historical items, and many small chapels. It is really beautiful and amazing to see. Look it up online if you get a chance, there may be some great photos and information!
We probably spent 2 hours at the Cathedral, there was just so much to see and soak in. Oh how I wish we had churches like this back home. The rest of the evening was very relaxing and we enjoyed warming up by the fire place in the cozy living area.
Chat soon, much love,
